Key takeaways
- A PSX horror game needs four things: a believable place, scarce weapons, gated doors and a consistent PS1 look. Each pick here covers one of them.
- The Small Town Buildings kit has a free edition, so you can test the setting before spending anything.
- Improvised weapons fit horror better than military ones. The Survival pack has 24 scavenged weapons for tense, low-ammo play.
- Locked doors, keys and keypads are the classic horror loop. The Door System gives you all three as small, readable scripts.
- The look is mostly constraints. Low Poly Dread explains vertex snapping, affine textures and fog so the result feels like the era.
What PSX horror assets actually are (and what they are not)
PSX horror assets are 3D models, textures and scripts designed to reproduce the look of mid-1990s console horror. That means low triangle counts, small pixel-art textures, flat shading and a slightly unstable image. The goal is not nostalgia alone. The limits hide detail, so the player's imagination fills the dark corners.
They are not a shader, and they are not a finished game. A PSX shader adds vertex snapping and affine texture warping on top of the models. Without it, the assets still look retro, but they will read as clean low poly. Our guide Low Poly Dread explains the shader maths in a few lines.
They are also not a substitute for design. A town, a few weapons and some doors give you a stage. Fear comes from pacing, sound and what you hide. The guide covers a tension curve and a reveal ladder for that reason.
When choosing assets, check that texture sizes and filtering match. Mixing a 64-pixel pixel texture with a crisp high-resolution one breaks the illusion. Our packs use pixel-art textures meant for nearest-neighbour filtering, so they sit together. Check engine settings as well: turn off texture smoothing and mipmaps so pixels stay hard.
How we ranked these
These picks come from the PSX horror collection. Each one covers a different part of the game: the setting, the fight, the tension and the look.
- Coverage of the game's needs
- Together the picks cover setting, combat, tension and look, so the list works as a shopping list.
- Consistent PSX style
- We favour assets with low triangle counts and small pixel textures that match each other.
- Value and a free start
- We compare itch.io prices and note the free edition of the town kit.
- Usable in common engines
- Models import into Unity, Godot and Unreal. The guide lists settings for each.

The models already use low triangle counts and small pixel textures. A PSX shader adds vertex snapping and affine texture warping on top.
Low triangle counts, tiny textures with hard pixels, vertex wobble, affine texture warping and heavy fog. The guide covers each one.
Control information. Keep enemies unseen, use sound, and reveal threats slowly. The guide explains a tension curve and a monster in three states.
Any engine works. Unity, Godot and Unreal all support custom shaders, and our guide lists import settings for each.
Yes. The packs include a licence for personal and commercial use. You cannot resell the models themselves.
