How to make a game like GTA 6: a realistic roadmap for indie developers

By Imersa Studios · Updated

You cannot recreate GTA 6 alone, but you can build a small GTA-style game: a compact city, one drivable car, a few pedestrians and one mission. Build it system by system: open world, driving, traffic and pedestrians, police and missions, in that order.

1. Be honest about scale

Rockstar's games are made by very large teams over many years. A solo developer will not match that, and trying is the surest way to never ship. The good news is that the formula is learnable, and a small version can be fun and sell. Many successful indie games pick a strong slice of a big game's idea and do it well.

You also cannot use Rockstar's names, maps or art. Build your own city, characters and story.

2. The systems a GTA-style game needs

3. Build in this order

  • Week 1 to 2: a grey-box block of city and a character that can walk and jump.
  • Week 3 to 4: an arcade car you can enter and exit.
  • Week 5 to 6: traffic on waypoints and a few pedestrians.
  • Week 7 to 8: one mission with a start, a goal and a fail state.
  • Then: art, sound, police, polish.

Use Traffic System for cars that follow lanes and obey junctions, and a kit like Small Town Buildings to dress a district without modeling every wall.

4. Pick a style you can finish

Photoreal cities cost a studio budget. A low poly or PSX look is cheap to build and has a loyal audience; the PSX horror guide shows the shader and texture side. Retro crime games on itch.io prove the genre can be small.

5. Ship a vertical slice first

One block, one car, one mission, polished. If that is fun, expand. If it is not, you saved a year. Use the time estimator to see what each extra system costs.
